Let’s Take A Look at 2024 Virginia Native Damon Thompson Junior; John Marshall high school (VA)

Mansfield, Texas was the weekend destination for the Wooten Top 150 camp.

Coming in, I knew this camp was loaded with a lot of promising prospects. There was no shortage of nationally recognized prospects in the building.

This platform also provides opportunities for not-so-highly recognized prospects to take advantage of the spotlight.

2024 6’0” 160-pound point guard Damon Thompson Jr. Caught my attention right away; Thompson has an opportunity to become a complete guard. He demonstrates good ballhandling skills and has good defensive instincts.

Last season for John Marshall high school, Thompson averaged 11.4 points per game, 2.6 assists per game, grab 2.0 rebounds per game.

Last season Thompson had big games against Carmel Christian 31 points, 25 points and 5 assists in win against Wheeler (GA) (Isaiah Collier). Thompson also had 22 in a half on Tre Parker (Vertiscal Academy).

On the court, Thompson demonstrates leadership skills while being patient as a passer. He plays with pace, and he’s not quick to judge. This gives me the indication that Thompson has a very good basketball IQ.

Offensively, Thompson shows a decent mid-range that extends out to the three-point line. His compact body allows him to absorb contact once he gets in the paint.

Defensively, he moved his feet very well on the perimeter and effectively used his core strength to beat the offensive player to the spot and absorb contact without fouling.

Final remarks:

The 2022-23 season could be a great opportunity for Damon to solidify himself; as one of the top point guard prospects in his region.

The next phase of Thompson’s development and growth will be for him to consistently improve in all areas of his game. This will increase his recruiting stock.
