Division I Implements New Reclassification Criteria for Schools Moving Up from Divisions II and III

The NCAA Division I Council has adopted stricter criteria for schools in Divisions II and III seeking to reclassify to Division I, aiming to enhance the student-athlete experience and ensure successful transitions.

Under the new policy, schools must meet measurable benchmarks to qualify for reclassification. This includes academic standards, financial aid requirements, and compliance with Division I core guarantees. Conferences inviting schools to Division I must also confirm the institution meets these criteria.

Key Changes for Reclassification

  1. Academic Requirements:
    • Schools must rank above the 10th percentile of current Division I institutions in at least one of the following:
      • Academic Progress Rate (APR)
      • Graduation Success Rate (GSR)
      • The difference between federal graduation rates for student-athletes and the general student body.
    • Institutions must also complete an academic review as part of the transition process.
  2. Division I Guarantees:
    • Schools must satisfy all Division I attestation requirements and complete the NCAA self-study program.
    • New financial aid standards require scholarship offerings to exceed the 10th percentile of active Division I programs.
  3. Reclassification Timeline:
    • Division II schools can complete the reclassification process in three years.
    • Division III schools will have a four-year timeline.
    • Schools already in the reclassification process may follow the new, shorter timeline if they meet all other requirements.

Progression through each phase of the process will be contingent on meeting annual benchmarks.
