To all young college basketball players getting paid —
You’ve entered a new chapter. Whether you realize it or not, you’re no longer just a student-athlete. You’ve stepped into the world of being a professional. Yes, you’re still in school, but you’re also earning money — sometimes more than full-grown adults with careers and families.
This is a blessing, but it’s also a responsibility.
You have to shift your mindset. You can’t treat this money like it’s play money or just a reward for being good at the game. This is your starting point. This is the seed. What you do with it now — how you manage it, invest it, and protect it — will shape your life beyond basketball.

Think about it:
- Are you budgeting?
- Do you understand taxes?
- Have you thought about investing, saving, or building credit?
- Are you thinking long-term or just living for the moment?
This isn’t about scaring you — it’s about waking you up.
You can buy a car, sure. But what if you used a portion to buy ownership? What if you invested in property, a business, or something that creates income while you sleep? What if you stacked money now so you never have to stress later?
You’ve already proven you can work hard on the court. Now it’s time to work smart off the court.
Talk to professionals. Ask questions. Read books. Study successful people. Keep your mind growing as fast as your game.
Because here’s the truth:
If you’re getting paid, you’re not just a player anymore.
You’re a brand.
You’re a business.
You’re a young man building a legacy.
Don’t waste the opportunity. Don’t get too comfortable. Don’t let the money fool you into thinking you’ve “made it.” This is only the beginning.
Handle your business. Stay humble. Stay focused. And always stay hungry.
The game will take care of you — if you take care of yourself first.
