“When a Public School Took Down a National Powerhouse: The Night Canyon Springs Beat Findlay Prep-10 Years Later”

It’s been over 10 years since this game took place, and I still don’t think we’ll ever see anything like it again in Las Vegas high school basketball. Nobody in the state believed a local public school like Canyon Springs could take down a powerhouse like Findlay Prep. But that’s exactly what happened.

This was the biggest upset in Las Vegas high school history—and if anyone wants to debate that, I’m listening.

Canyon Springs is still the only public high school in Las Vegas to ever pull off an upset of this magnitude.

History “The Night”

Now just look at Findlay Prep’s roster at the time:

  1. Allonzo Trier – University of Arizona
  2. Derryck Thornton – Duke University
  3. Horace Spencer – Auburn University
  4. Justin Jackson – University of Maryland
  5. Khalea Turner – University of Tulsa
  6. Jayce Johnson – University of Utah
  7. P.J. Washington – University of Kentucky
  8. O’Shae Brissett – Syracuse University
  9. Donnie Tillman – University of Utah
  10. Shakwon Barrett – Tulane University
  11. Aleksa Novaković – Eastern Illinois University

Two of those guys went to the NBA: Allonzo Trier (New York Knicks) and P.J. Washington (Charlotte Hornets, Dallas Mavericks).

And yet… Canyon Springs did the unthinkable.

Jordan Davis—without a doubt the best player on that Canyon team and one of the best in the state—hit a clutch pull-up jumper in the lane with 15 seconds left in overtime. Final score: Canyon Springs 60, Findlay Prep 59.

Jordan Davis

Findlay was the No. 1 team in the country at one point that season. They ended up ranked No. 4 nationally after losing to Ben Simmons’ Montverde team in the national semifinal.

And they lost… to a public school team from North Las Vegas.

I was there in the gym that night. And the funniest part of the video? You can hear someone in the background yelling, “Take the ball out of Jordan Davis’ hands.” Man, was he crazy?

Jordan Davis was him.
