New Mexico’s 99–89 exhibition win at Oklahoma State on October 11 supplied two useful Mountain West signals: Jake Hall remains a major perimeter scoring threat, and the Lobos have work to do finishing defensive possessions.
Hall scored 31 points, making eight of nine field-goal attempts, six of seven three-pointers and nine of ten free throws. His shooting follows a freshman season in which he made a school-record 117 threes. Sunday’s accuracy should not become a season projection, but the production builds on an established strength.
Freshman Fynn Lastring added 16 points and three triples. Together, he and Hall accounted for every UNM three-pointer; the remaining Lobos went 0-for-9. Their contributions suggest a potentially useful shooting pairing, although broader perimeter reliability remains unproven.

The overlooked scoring detail came at the foul line. Both teams produced 63 points from field goals. UNM made 36 free throws to Oklahoma State’s 26, accounting for the final margin.
The glass told a different story. Oklahoma State collected 22 offensive rebounds and held a 27–12 advantage in second-chance points. UNM’s scoring overcame that deficit, but allowing repeated opportunities is a concern worth tracking against conference opponents.
The result ended Oklahoma State’s 57-game home exhibition winning streak. That history needs context: the Cowboys report that the first 56 victories came against all-star teams and small-college opponents. Oklahoma State also played without three frontcourt contributors, while point guard Kanye Clary missed the second half because of injury.
Why this team matters: New Mexico demonstrated scoring options against Big 12 opposition. The next question is whether it can pair those options with reliable defensive rebounding. This exhibition offers evidence to investigate, not proof of conference superiority or a regular-season résumé victory.
